Statement on NLC proposed closure of North Lanarkshire Leisure Facilities

Statement of Steven Bonnar MP

I have received a huge volume of recent communication from constituents understandably concerned about the future of community and leisure facilities across North Lanarkshire.

On behalf of those community groups and individuals, I have written to the Chief Executive of North Lanarkshire Council, Des Murray, as well as every member of the Policy & Strategy Committee before its scheduled meeting later this week.

I have made clear my deep concern about the impact such a decision would have on local communities.

I reinforce the sentiments within that correspondence here now and encourage ALL locally elected members to VOTE AGAINST this course of action.

Facilities across our constituency at risk include Sir Matt Busby Centre, Moodiesburn Library, Stepps Library, Gartcosh Community Centre, Shawhead Community Centre, Calder Community Centre, Coatbridge OSC/Janet Hamilton Centre, New Townhead Community Centre, Lochview Golf Course, and Viewpark Library.

Local people depend on these services for their physical, mental health, and wellbeing, with people stressing the benefits these facilities and activities have on their wellbeing.

Having previously served two terms as a councillor on North Lanarkshire Council and seeing first-hand how officer-led policy is implemented at this Authority, I, along with my constituents, have grave concerns about the impact these decisions would have on the communities we serve.

I do not believe these cuts are necessary and conflict with the wishes of local communities.

It's not time for political football on such issues; it's time for engagement and communication. It's time for the elected members of North Lanarkshire Council to do the right thing for the people we all serve.
